The DC Food Project

The awesome team at DC Food Project is comprised of a group of local moms with kids who attend some of the local elementary schools.  They became inspired to act and Start the Dc Food Project when they learned that a local teacher was using their own money to help one of their students purchase food for the week. This child did not have enough to eat during the weekend when school-provided breakfast and lunch were unavailable.

The idea that kids going to school in their own home town did not have enough food to eat when they went home for the weekend pulled heart strings of these mommas and they went to work. As it turns out, there are more kids facing this challenge than anyone in the schools or area  realized and a change needed to happen. That conversation led to more conversations with parents, who were as shocked as they were and ready to help in any way they could.

With a group of determined parents leading a new organization with the aim of doing something about this need, the DC Food Project was born!  Each parent and volunteer came from a diverse background with talents and experiences that contributed to this new organization hitting the ground running

The DC Food Project now works with school administrators, school districts, local businesses, residents and several other organizations to raise funds that are directly going towards getting food to the kids who need it via “share tables” and “weekend bag programs”, each of which you can learn more about on right here on their website, https://dcfoodproject.org/programs-1

Their goal is to continue to expand DC Food Project programs throughout schools in all of Washington, DC. but for now, their work is exclusively focused on the Emergency Weekend Bag Program, targeting families in immediate need. The hope is  to return to our Share Table Program and Weekend Bag Program now that schools have begun to reopen and tackle what they anticipate will be a long road to recovery for many families in our region. With your help we can ensure that none of D.C.’s children go hungry.
