Earth Day Cleanup in Columbia Heights

Join Viva the Life Properties, Hook Hall, and Columbia Heights Insider for a Community Celebration and Earth Day Cleanup in Columbia Heights

Every neighborhood is a village, and the strength of every village comes from the collective efforts of the people who call it home. Beautiful homes are part of what makes our village a desirable place to live. But to truly cultivate a village that’s healthy, connected, and cooperative, we have to think about our community as an extension of our individual residences. An Earth Day cleanup in Columbia Heights will help us do just that.

If you know me, you know that I love my local Columbia Heights community. I also believe that being good stewards of our neighborhood leads to a shared sense of ownership and care for not only the space around us–but also for one another. Cleaning up the space around us is good for our own health, as well as for the health of our villages and our planet. It’s also a chance to form relationships with our neighbors. A University of Pennsylvania study even showed that cleaning and greening vacant lots and community spaces correlates with safer neighborhoods.

Earth Day Cleanup Opportunities in Columbia Heights and Beyond

This Earth Day, there are many opportunities across the DC metro area to help cultivate and care for the villages that make up our great city. Here are a few that caught my eye:

Join Us at Hook Hall

If you haven’t made a commitment to one of the Earth Day events listed above, consider joining the Viva the Life Properties team, in partnership with Hook Hall and Columbia Heights Insider, for our annual community cleanup and celebration on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

Our festivities kick off at 11:00 a.m. We’ll arrive at Hook Hall, clean up our streets for one hour, and then return to Hook Hall at noon for drink specials and live music. Supplies including trash bags, trash grabbers, and gloves will be provided. Just sign up, and we’ll see you there!

Healthy Habits Build Healthy Neighborhoods

If you can’t attend the neighborhood cleanup, consider starting a healthy habit that makes an impact in your own neighborhood. Participate solo, invite your child or grandchild to bond with you through a shared cleanup activity, or gather a group of friends and select the habit that works best for you:

  • Got 1 minute? Oftentimes, we’re just passing through our communities to get to work, home, or social activities. This Earth Day (or any day), set a timer on your phone for 60 seconds while you’re on the go. Pick up anything in your path that doesn’t belong on the ground and dispose of it appropriately.
  • Got 1 hour? Gather your family members or a few friends and focus on cleaning up a single block or specific area, such as around community entrances or a favorite park. If your crew is driven by competition, see who can fill a bag the fastest.

However you choose to celebrate this Earth Day, you’ll be making a difference and helping us all live healthier lives.
