This past month as the country celebrates National Hispanic American History Heritage Month, here at Viva the Life Properties we celebrate too. As a Latino, I’ve experienced what the Hispanic culture brings to our nation. And in real estate, it is particularly apparent now.
With Covid, families consolidated. We’ve seen a real growth in multi-generational homes, a very Latino approach to life. In my house we have three generations. My mother has an apartment in the basement.
If you look at the data, Pew reports, that in the last fifty years, the number of people living in multigenerational family households quadrupled, reaching 59.7 million in March 2021. The share more than doubled as well, to 18% of the U.S. population.
That sense of family and practicality is the Hispanic way of life.
Even though Covid had a lot to do with it in the beginning, almost forcing families to live together, I think people are beginning to see the benefits of multi-generational homes. Pooling resources, having emotional support, and offsetting day care costs are a few of the reasons it’s a winning lifestyle.
Our clients are looking for homes with basement apartments, in-law, and master suites.
DC is expensive. We need to find alternative solutions to housing. Right now, Nessa and I are seeing a number of different approaches to buying homes. Recently, we put together a deal that included two different families sharing one home.
If you don’t think you can buy a home, you just might need a more creative approach. A Latino approach.
Our next blog will discuss the four ways to make your home, the happiest and healthiest it can be for you and your planet. Viva the happy, healthy life.
