Frozen YO, a beloved frozen yogurt shop in the heart of Columbia Heights, Washington, D.C., has closed its doors for good. The closure follows a contentious dispute between employees and a new investor who sought to lower everyone’s salaries. This clash of interests ultimately resulted in the employees posting a defiant sign that read, “We do not work for free,” leading the owners to make the difficult decision to permanently shut down the business.
The Beloved Frozen Yogurt Shop
Frozen YO had been a cherished establishment in the Columbia Heights neighborhood for years. Known for its delicious frozen yogurt creations and a welcoming atmosphere, it had become a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. The shop’s vibrant colors and a wide array of toppings allowed customers to create their own delectable treats, making it a popular destination for families, students, and friends seeking a sweet escape. The management at the shop also allowed District Bridges, which runs the local Columbia Heights Main Street program, to keep supplies in their space, enabling them to run events at the Columbia Heights Plaza.
A Change in Ownership
The trouble began when a new investor, whose identity remains undisclosed, took over the shop. While change in ownership is not uncommon in the business world, it often comes with a desire to implement changes, whether it be a menu revamp, renovation, or in this case, an attempt to lower labor costs. The new investor’s intentions were clear: they aimed to cut the salaries of the dedicated staff that had been serving the community for years.

“We Do Not Work for Free”
Faced with the prospect of reduced wages, the Frozen YO employees decided to take a stand. They joined forces and posted a sign at the entrance of the shop that read, “We do not work for free.”
