This week I decided to check out Union Drinkery, the new bar from the folks behind A&D in Shaw and Small Fry (next door to Union Drinkery) — and it’s great.
It’s a cozy, dark, no frills neighborhood spot with good cocktails, friendly bartenders and a nice vibe. There’s also a rear patio area with eight picnic tables and a second floor, which I haven’t checked out yet. The Washingtonian says they plan to add foosball and maybe darts upstairs. They also plan to host events like a luau and pig roast.
I’ve been twice already this week, it’s a great place to sit and chat with friends. And the drinks are delicious.
Happy hour deals are pretty good too, $7 cocktails, $5 draft beers and $7 beer and shot combos from 5-8 pm. Regular price for cocktails is only $9, which is pretty awesome. I’ve tried a bunch so far and liked them all — the A La Louisiana with rye, Benedictive, vermouth and bitters was pretty tasty. They also have varieties of a flip, old fashioned, and another one with lime and basil, but I forget what it was called. They only have four beers on draft, but one of them was Sweetwater IPA from Atlanta, which is delicious.
You can also order the full menu from Small Fry next door, so things like poutine, BBQ, nachos and scotch eggs.
It’s a great spot. I’m a big fan already.
Union Drinkery is at 3216 Georgia Ave NW.
