Labor Day Weekend is almost here! For everyone sticking around town for the long weekend, here’s a couple of events happening around in the neighborhood.

Friday, August 30

Amaro Tasting & “The Great Beauty” Screening at Suns Cinema

Mount Pleasant



Suns Cinema is teaming up with the DC amaro distillery, Don Ciccio & Figli, to host a happy hour tasting followed by a showing of the Oscar-winning film, The Great Beauty, directed by the acclaimed Italian director, Paolo Sorrentino. The selection of Italian digestifs will provide the perfect complement to the foreign-language film that follows the journey of an aging journalist who has spent his life living in the lavish nightlife of Rome, but after turning 65 is suddenly forced to examine his life and rediscover the beauty and eccentricities of Rome.

Tasting begins at 6:30 pm, and the film begins at 8:00 pm. Tickets range from $10 – $25. Purchase tickets here



Annual Park View Outdoor Movie Night

Park View, Georgia Ave

District Bridges’ Lower Georgia Ave Main Street will be hosting its fourth annual Park View Outdoor Community Movie Night this Friday, August 30th, at Hook Hall Beer Garden. This year they will be screening Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Bring your blanket, lawn chair, family and friends for this great community event. Adult beverages will be available for those 21+ with valid Photo ID.

Seating begins at 7:00 pm and the show will start at 8:00 pm. Free to attend. Find out more information here.



Saturday, August 31st

Neighborhood Volunteer Event to Help Low-Income Seniors

Shaw



WeAreFamilyis looking for volunteers to help deliver groceries to low-income seniors in the North Capitol and Shaw neighborhoods. This is a truly rewarding opportunity to meet your neighbors and give back to our community. Bring yourself, your family, and your friends! Volunteers will meet up at the Metropolitan Community Church located at 474 Ridge St NW.

Milk Relics Exhibit at the Lost Origins Gallery

Mount Pleasant



The Lost Origins gallery is opening a new exhibit by local artist Tom Kim. This solo exhibition reflects Kim’s career as an illustrator and animator, as well as his upbringing as a Korean American. Milk Relicsis a profound and playful narrative series that tells the post-apocalyptic story of a society on the brink of environmental crisis. As the artist says, “The apocalypse is best served with cookies.” More than 20 local artists including musicians, poets, and writers, will perform alongside the art through the run of the show.

Show runs from Aug 31 – Sept 29. Free to attend. 

Sunday, September 1st

Jam Sesh for All Ages and Levels

Meridian Hill Park 



Join your neighbors for a unique Jam Out in the Park series. All skill levels are welcome to join in the fun. Bring your instrument to jam out or bring a blanket to watch the show. Musicians interested in playing should register and download the song book on the Meridian Hill Park Jam page.

2:30 pm – 4:30 pm. Free, but donations are encouraged. 

CAMP at The Line 

Adams Morgan

James Beard Award-winning Chef Spike Gjerde and Corey Polyoka of A Rake’s Progress present CAMP at the LINE, a rooftop event series designed as an escape from the city. The series features a lineup of community and cultural organizations hosted on the Line rooftop with stunning panoramic views of the DC skyline. The bar will be cold, the snacks will be endless, and CAMP is now in session!

Series runs from Aug 25 – Oct 20. $5 donation plus individual costs of food and drinks.

Monday, September 2nd

BBQ Cookout at The Midlands Beer Garden

Park View, Petworth



Stop by the Midlandsfor their Labor Day BBQ Partyto officially celebrate the end of summer. The beer garden is partnering up with Smoke and Ember for a menu of ribs, pork, brisket, chicken salad and more! They will also be featuring draft cocktails from Cotton & Reed Distillery and $4 pints of Mermaid Pilsner to cool you off. All ages welcome so bring your kids, friends, and pups for a relaxing Labor Day cookout.

Noon – Midnight. Free to attend. 

And for those feeling extra ambitious, swing by the Midlands early for a 10 am yoga classthat includes a post-workout beer and social hour.
