The latest installment of the DC Funk Parade is this Saturday, and there’s a lot going on.
The “day fair” with a lot of vendors all over runs from noon to 7pm, while the actual parade, which is a blast, is 3-4pm and runs from the Howard Theatre at 7th and T to the Lincoln Theatre at 13th and U. I’m not sure the exact route but I’m sure you’ll be able to hear it — in previous years there have been lots of bands and folks with instruments walking along.
The day fair is also really neat, and in previous years it’s been along U Street from about 14th to 9th Street, I presume it will be the same this year. There are local vendors, nonprofits, craftspeople, food, arts, music and more at the fair.
There are also a zillion concerts and other events all day, here’s the full list. There are 6 stages total, with the main stage at 965 Florida, just northwest of the 9:30 Club. Go-go legend Backyard Band are the headliners there at 6 pm and the Sun Ra Arkestra is headlining at the 1998 Vermont Ave stage. There are a ton of other bands, including the awesome local funk group Nag Champa heading the stage at 1919 9th.
Other events including a high school marching band competition (which was awesome last year) and various art and music events in buildings along the route.
The fest was a lot of fun last year, and lots of local bars and restaurants did deals afterwards as well.
They have a phone app with details too.
