A few months ago I wrote about Split, a new DC-based ride-sharing service where you can hitch rides with others going in the same area. They were operating in parts of southern Columbia Heights, but have now expanding to Petworth, Park View and Mt. Pleasant.

I don’t have the exact streets yet (their website still has the old map) but it appears to go up to Buchanan Street NW and east to about 5th Street NW.

Here’s their press release:

Split Now Serves Mt. Pleasant and Petworth

DC Smarter Shared Rides Service Expands Again

(Washington, DC) – For the second time in recent weeks, the newly launched DC-based transportation company is expanding its service area to cover Mt. Pleasant and Petworth. Effective today, Split is available in the popular northwest neighborhoods.

Because Split operates on a dynamic routing algorithm that uses both the rider’s starting location as well as their destination, the service includes a ‘point network’ of pick-up and drop-off points across the city. Expansion means adding points and increasing the number of available drivers to make pick-ups timely.

Called ‘smarter shared rides’, Split launched in late May with an area that covered central Washington stretching from Georgetown University to Union Station west to east and from Constitution Avenue on the south to Columbia Heights to the north. In early July, the DC-based start-up added 25% more coverage to its service map by adding areas of Capitol Hill, the H Street Corridor and south to Nationals Ballpark and the Navy Yard.

The transportation company continues to experience growth in terms of app downloads, registrations, and total number of rides. Week over week growth throughout the summer has been between 25-50%.

“The addition of Mt. Pleasant and Petworth to our service area is important for Split,” said company CEO Ario Keshani. “These popular neighborhoods offer many reasons to visit or to live, but the options for travel to and from other parts of the city are limited. We are pleased to offer on-demand service at the price of public transit.”

Further expansion is expected for Split. The northwest neighborhoods of Glover Park, Cleveland Park and the area around The American University should be a part of the Split service area as fall approaches. The company plans to provide coverage across the entire District of Columbia soon.
