You may recall that we wrote about MoveDC a couple of weeks ago — it’s DDOT’s new initiative to develop a coordinated, multimodal long-range transportation plan for the District.

As someone who uses Capital Bikeshare, rides metro and has a car, I was glad to hear that it has launched.  The entire transportation network, in addition to important regional connections, will be considered during the MoveDC plan. Each mode of transportation will be evaluated and considered as a part of the development of the multimodal transportation plan.

As much as our public transportation has improved in the past few years, particularly in terms of making the city bike-friendly, we have a long way to go. Our subway and bus systems in particular don’t compare well to those of Madrid, Hamburg and other cities that I know well.

The planning process formally kicked off on January 15, 2013, and a draft plan is anticipated by late 2013. As a first step, MoveDC is holding an Idea Exchange on Saturday, February 9, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the MLK Library at 9th and G.

Let’s make sure Columbia Heights is well represented at the Idea Exchange and beyond. For more information go to the MoveDC website, including a calendar of events and frequently asked questions:
