The 4th is here, and it’s my belief that Columbia Heights is the best place in the country to be for the holiday — you can see the fireworks on the Mall, which are always impressive, and then in every direction you can see other fireworks, from random folks on the street to bigger displays in neighboring towns. For whatever reason, our area seems to be the hub for amateur shows, and those amateur shows are often pretty impressive. I’ve heard it described as Baghdad at the beginning of the first Gulf War, which is pretty accurate.
In any case, it’s pretty fun, as long as people are safe about it.
So where are you going to watch the fireworks? Rooftops are always a popular spot, as is the hill on 13th and 11th near Clifton Street. Got any other good spots?
And where are you buying fireworks? I saw a stand at about 14th and Newton, are there more?
And below are some fireworks from last year at 13th and Otis.
