Local Black-Owned Businesses

COVID-19 has been hard on small businesses over the last few months, and with the protests and activism around the world in support of Black Lives Matter and civil rights over the last few weeks, it’s a great time to find and support Black-owned businesses in our area.

Local blog Feed the Malik has a lot of great resources, including separate lists of Black-owned businesses that are currently open for DC, Maryland and Virginia as well as a list of Black-owned food establishments that don’t have a fixed location or do catering.

The site is run by food blogger Anela Malik, who also has a great essay, “Why Supporting Black-Owned Businesses During COVID-19 Is Essential.” Washingtonian has a nice article about her as well.

The DC list has a lot of my favorite spots in our area, like the cafe Heat da Spot, vegan restaurant Nu Vegan restaurant, and the delicious Jamaicain spot Sweet Sosumba, plus a number I haven’t tried but have been meaning to check out. Any of your favorites on there?

They also have a form you can submit if any places are missing.

There’s also another resource for places beyond bars and restaurants, DC Black, that includes shopping, services, entertainment and more.
