The regularly scheduled meeting of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1A is this Wednesday — 1A includes Columbia Heights from about Harvard to Spring. It’s at 7pm at Harriet Tubman School at 13th and Kenyon. The ANC is a local elected body that advises city council on local issues.
Along with reports from the various committees and some local groups, they’re also discussing a new city law that will allow small businesses to apply for residential parking permits. PoP wrote about it briefly, some people are apoplectic about it, saying it will mean less parking for residents and there will be abuse, but others argue that it will be ok, local businesses need parking too.
The ANC is going to oppose the bill, which was proposed by Councilmembers Todd, Nadeau and White. The full text is here, it applies to small businesses with less than 10 employees, not including home-based businesses.
The ANC also has other topics up for discussion, like a community comment section, presentations from Clean Up and Improve the Columbia Heights Dog Park, the Office of the People’s Council and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and some zoning and planning issues.
The meetings are always interesting, and a good way to see how local government happens, meet your ANC rep, and also have your voice heard.
