Decorating your house for Halloween does not have to be an expensive ordeal. We’ve provided a round-up of ideas for how to inexpensively decorate your house below.

Once you’ve decorated your home, don’t forget to enter our Mount Pleasant & Columbia Heights Halloween Decorating Contest. We’re giving away some great prizes (including $500 to the Overall Best In Show, thanks to our 1st place prize sponsor Viva the Life Properties).

  • Monster Eyes: Save up those toilet paper tubes—they are invaluable for crafts! Cut out eye shapes and insert a glow stick or LED candle into each one on Halloween. This will create a “glowing eye” effect once it is dark outside.
  • Make A Haunted Tree: Grab up fallen branches and twigs, and spray paint them in black. Stuff them in a planter and add some fake cobweb (available for under $2) to create a spooky haunted tree.
  • Giant Spiderweb & Spider: Grab some fake cobweb from the store and use it to create a giant spiderweb in your yard. Then, grab some twigs and spray paint them black. Get a trash bag and wad it up to form the body and head, and attach the twigs as legs. Hang it in your cobweb for a giant scary spider!
  • Window Silhouettes: There are so many options with this one! Cut out Halloween shapes (a black cat, zombie, witch, or ghost) from poster board and tape it inside your window to create a silhouette during the night while your house lights are on inside.
  • Creepy Figurines: Take a trip to a local thrift store (Thrifty’s on Georgia Ave or Goodwill over in Fort Lincoln are both good options) and pick up some ceramic figures. Turn them into creepy ones by painting them black and turning their eyes red or green with a Sharpie.
  • Ghosts: Grab some old sheets, and either white plastic bowls, clear containers, old milk jugs, or anything you can use to form the head of the ghost. Drill a hole in the container you’re using and run a string through it, and then attach it wherever you’re going to hang the ghost from. Drape the sheet over the container, use a sharpie to draw the eyes, and mouth, and ta da! You have a ghost.

This is just the beginning–let us know in the comments below if you have other ideas for cheap ways to decorate this year!
