One man died and eight other people were injured Sunday evening when three men opened fire at 14th Street and Spring Road in Columbia Heights.

The shooting occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The shooting appeared to be targeted, Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham said in a press conference. Nine adult individuals were taken to the hospital, with three in serious condition and one pronounced dead.

According to an MPD update, the decedent has been identified as 28 year-old Devin Peterson, of Northeast, DC.

“Everyone should be outraged that in the daytime when people are frequenting our restaurants, frequenting our businesses, that there could be an attack on the DC community,” Mayor Bowser said during the press conference.

Newsham said the shooting was likely part of an ongoing dispute between neighborhood crews.

  1. The way our city council (particularly Charles Allen, Grasso, and Ward 1 CM Nadeau) keep legislating dysfunction into the fabric of DC life by enabling people with problems with the tools they need to keep these problems, it’s only going to get worse from here.
