You may remember Social, the bar and restaurant at 14th and Meridian which closed in mysterious circumstances a few months ago. They’re gone, but the new tenant is called The Getaway, a 1970s Hollywood-themed place: i.e. Steven McQueen and Paul Newman. They had their soft opening on May 27 and they opened yesterday. Here’s their website and their Facebook.
PoP reported the first floor is supposed to be more like a neighborhood bar and the upstairs will be a modern diner. Good, because I always though the upstairs of Social had a strange vibe, more like a furniture showroom than a restaurant. There will also be brunch, which is sorely needed, although apparently not quite yet as it isn’t on the menu.
Rachel Tepper with the Feast has more: it’s run by lawyer Jeremy Mintz, a lawyer and first-time restaurateur, and Alejandro Umrez, who used to manage the Black Squirrel in Adams Morgan and the now-closed Ceviche in Glover Park.
The menu (PDF) has a fair amount of seafood, small plates, lots of sliders, and entrees ranging from $17-$23, which seems a bit high for the location. They also have a number of $8 signature cocktails and beer from $4-$6, which I support strongly.
The outdoor area will have 50 seats, be open to 3 am on weekends, and have a daiquiri bar, but not sure if that’s open yet. I’ll check soon. There’s also going to be an art exhibition space on the third floor.
Has anyone been? What do you think?
